Brief History

The Regent Park Community Health Centre officially opened on December 19, 1973 in a ribbon cutting ceremony involving the Premier of Ontario, the Hon. William Davis, the Hon. Donald MacDonald (the Federal MP representative), Margaret Scrivener, (the provincial MPP representative) and Mr. Neil Tanner (the President of the Regent Park Community Improvement Association - RPCIA).

In Mr. Tanner's welcoming address, he stated, "The dreams of the residents of this community and the RPCIA for almost four years have at last become a reality. The health needs of Regent Park have been of great concern to all those who have devoted themselves to a better community. The five members of the Board of Directors - and I am proud to be one of them - have been actively involved in the planning of the Centre and will continue to play an active role to assure the tenants' viewpoints are always expressed. This great achievement would not have been possible without the hard work of a group of tenants and in particular of one man, Richard Boundy, who has worked with tireless energy and determination for this Centre."

It should be noted that the RPCHC required nearly 5 years of organizing and at that time the major health issues identified by the tenants were inadequate health facilities in the community, total lack of family doctors, total lack of dental care, and high drug costs.

At the time of the opening, the Centre consisted of six employees - one administrator, two family doctors, one nurse practitioner and two nurses.

Over the years the RPCHC has evolved and grown. However, it was not until 1982 that the overall funding arrangements for CHC's became more secure and since that time the Ministry of Health has provided ongoing core funding for CHC's across the province.

In 1997, the RPCHC had received the government's approval of $6.3 million in funding for a brand new community Health Centre after numerous government meetings and public consultations - with local residents expressing their need for improved services, increased access for seniors and the disabled, and new health programs. The new facility is located at the corner of Parliament and Dundas Streets.

A Ground Breaking Ceremony for the new Health Centre was held at 4:00 p.m. on May 22, 1998 (Friday). After more than a year of construction, the RPCHC moved from 19 Belshaw Place to 465 Dundas Street East and had the new facility opened on July 19, 1999 (Monday). An Official Opening Ceremony for the new Health Centre was held on September 9, 1999 (Thursday).
