Student / Parent Support Worker

We are a dynamic community-based health centre promoting social justice and health equity in the Regent Park neighbourhood and east downtown area of Toronto. We operate out of several locations and provide a wide variety of services including: primary health care, chiropody, physiotherapy, health promotion, social work, community health, immigrant and refugee services, housing assistance, harm reduction and homeless programs, Pathways to Education for high school students, infant and child development programs, parenting education and family advocacy.


Student/Parent Support Worker

One year Contract - full-time 35 hrs per week

Salary Range: $22.33 - $26.91 per hour plus benefits


The mission of the Pathways to Education program is to reduce poverty and its effects by supporting the development of youth from economically disadvantaged communities, promoting their individual health and the health of the community by addressing one principle social determinant of health: education.

The SPSW role provides ongoing support for the students on their caseloads; identifying strengths and challenges (including social/emotional challenges) with the goal of promote student success. These supports include helping students and their parents/guardians better understand the secondary school system, increasing their ability to successfully engage secondary school teachers and administrators. The SPSWs work collaboratively with numerous partners as well as facilitate student participation in the rest of the Pathways Program. The SPSW will work closely with the Pathways to Education team to identify challenges facing students and to help families to understand the secondary school system and increase their capacities to successfully engage secondary school teachers and administrators to support the achievement of the youth in the program.


  • Minimum two years’ experience as a tutor, mentor or youth worker or related experience working with youth from diverse backgrounds
  • Knowledge, preferably gained by experience, of the following: secondary school system gained through direct experience with teachers, administrators and support staff including knowledge of approaches to providing support to youth with special educational needs strengths and capacities of the students as well as barriers and challenges faced by youth in a culturally-diverse, low-income community supportive counselling techniques small group dynamics and experience in facilitation appropriate to youth and adults from a variety of cultural backgrounds community and social service resources, in particular services for youth which can support their individual emotional and social development
  • Relevant college diploma or university degree; social work or teaching credentials an asset
  • Oral and written fluency in French is an asset
  • Understanding of Anti-oppression principles and ability to work effectively with people of various cultural, age and economic backgrounds
  • Knowledge of the Regent Park area and issues affecting families living within the Regent and Moss Park communities
  • This position requires flexible hours including some evening work.
